I'd like to talk about the discovery of penicillin, which I find incredibly interesting. This event took place in late September 1928, at St Mary's Hospital in London. The key figure involved was a Scottish physician and microbiologist named Alexander Fleming. He was working in his laboratory, studying staphylococci bacteria. The story goes that he went on holiday and returned to find that one of his culture plates had been contaminated with a mold, penicillin notatum. More importantly, he noticed that the bacteria surrounding the mold had been killed. Other scientists were also involved, notably Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain, who later developed penicillin into a usable drug during World War II.
